With EU Support: Via Ferrata Piva Opens the Door to New Tourism Experiences
In the Piva Canyon near Plužine, the first certified via ferrata in Montenegro is available – a specially arranged and secured climbing route in rock, equipped with steel cables, metal footholds, and other safety elements.
Opened in October 2024, Via Ferrata Piva is a protected climbing route 800 metres long. It is of medium-easy difficulty and reaches a maximum height of 130 metres above the Piva River.
An average tour lasts two and a half to three hours, and according to Via Ferrata Piva, no prior climbing experience is required, only moderate physical fitness.
The route starts near the bridge over the Piva River, descends to a natural spring, passes above the river, and ends with a 80-metre vertical ascent. The most frequent visitors to Via Ferrata Piva come from the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Israel, the United Kingdom, Serbia, Croatia, and the USA.
“We are satisfied with the start of the tourist season, and the first organized groups of visitors arrived already in March, from different parts of the world – including Morocco, Brazil, Venezuela, and Germany. This adventure content in the Piva Canyon near Plužine is increasingly attracting international tourists, confirming the growing interest in active tourism in this part of Montenegro,” they emphasize at Via Ferrata Piva.
Through such infrastructure projects, as they conclude, the tourism offer is being improved and natural heritage is being valorised, which was also the goal of the Via Ferrata Piva project, implemented with the support of the European Union through the IPA cross-border cooperation programme Serbia – Montenegro.
