The renovated Zagreb funicular once again connects the Upper and Lower Towns
5 million euros secured from the ITU mechanism for the revitalization of the cultural symbol of Zagreb.
Minister of Regional Development and European Union Funds Nataša Mikuš Žigman, as an envoy of Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, Mayor of Zagreb Tomislav Tomašević and President of the Management Board of ZET Marko Bogdanović solemnly launched the renovated Zagreb funicular.
The revitalization, or protection of the funicular as a cultural heritage and tourist symbol of the city of Zagreb, was co-financed by the European Union through the ITU mechanism in the amount of 5 million euros. This is the largest intervention on the funicular in more than 50 years, and the project included the rehabilitation of the lower and upper stations, along with the renovation of the route and viaduct, modernization of the drive system, installation of new rails and cabins, and increasing the level of accessibility for people with disabilities. The new cabins have visually retained their recognizable appearance, but are equipped with video surveillance, air conditioning and a communication system, in order to increase the level of safety and comfort of travel.
Congratulating everyone who participated in the preparation and implementation of this project, Minister Mikuš Žigman reminded that as much as 80.5 million euros have been secured from this special mechanism for investment in cities for the urban agglomeration of Zagreb. In addition to the funicular, this funding also finances the revitalization of the hot water network in Zagreb and the largest ITU project, the Zagreb City Library and the socio-cultural center at the Paromlin location.
The Zagreb funicular first connected the Lower and Upper Towns in 1890, and today, with its 66 meters in length, it is known as the shortest funicular in the world.
