There will be more. How much financial aid did Ukraine receive from its Western partners in the first month of the war?
Since the Russian military invasion of Ukraine, the country has received more than $ 3.2 billion in financial assistance from Western partners. This amount could double in April.
As of February 24, 2022, Ukraine has received $ 3.221 billion in financial assistance from Western partners. "The amounts do not include financial assistance, which is directly aimed at the purchase of weapons and other military equipment," said Vitaly Vavrischuk, head of the macroeconomic research department of Investment Capital Ukraine ICU Group.
This amount includes loans and grants. The largest share is a $ 1.4 billion tranche from the International Monetary Fund under the Instrument for Rapid Support of the Rapid Financing Instrument. The National Bank of Ukraine received $ 126 million in non-refundable international aid. Loans from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the World Bank have already been received, as from the European Union (EU).
In addition, $ 3.144 billion in aid has already been confirmed, but has not yet been provided or used, and the funds will be available next month, according to Vavrischuk. In particular, it is about exchanging the currency with the Bank of Poland in the equivalent of one billion dollars, which will be used to replenish the reserves of the NBU and the US guarantee on a loan of one billion dollars from the Ukrainian government. Also, financial assistance will be available from the Government of Japan, the EU, the World Bank for the payment of scholarships and World Bank guarantees under a loan from the Government of Ukraine (with the assistance of the Netherlands and Sweden).
"Large sums are still promised from the EBRD, the EIB and the World Bank (more than $ 5.5 billion in total), but these are long-term projects and there is little specific information about them," said Vitaly Vavrischuk.
