There is no planet B – motto of EU Delegation’s green campaign
Disappearance of signature vegetables or species like the Balkan lynx and bees? Sounds scary, but it is real, if we do not do something now – warns the “Museum of the Future”, which “exhibits” what can be lost, already during our lifetime, due to climate change and environmental degradation. Preventing such a future calls for a strong political commitment and immediate action - at all levels, said Ambassador Geer and DPM for European Affairs Dimitrov at the start of the campaign.
The clock is ticking and we have to act immediately - because we have no planet B.
With this message – and at a symbolic time (11:55), on 29 November the EU Delegation launched its new “EU with You” campaign, which focuses on the European Green Deal.
“The Green Deal is more than just a political ambition. It consists of practical action involving everyone – government, municipalities, business, civil society and ordinary citizens. It is about undertaking comprehensive reform as well as creating initiatives that can attract green investment – public or private. It is about transforming the way we live, inside the European Union and in future member states”, Ambassador David Geer stated at the event, also attended by Deputy Prime Minister for European Affairs Nikola Dimitrov, mayors from municipalities across North Macedonia and representatives of the diplomatic corps.
The Ambassador outlined the different instruments at the disposal of the EU to help the country and the municipalities in tackling the challenges of climate change and improving the life of citizens. He called upon the authorities to seize the opportunities, stressing that ‘the responsibility and the initiatives remain with you’.
Prior to the event, the audience could visit the “Museum of the Future” - a reminder of what can be lost during our lifetime due to climate change and environmental degradation. The exhibits include not just the planet’s essentials such as fresh water, clean air, bees but also some locally cherished items such as North Macedonia’s signature Jabuchar tomato and the Balkan lynx. The “Museum of the Future” (https://eugreendeal.mk/(link is external)) will travel across the country next year.
“Let’s create opportunities together using this campaign as an inspiration: to change hearts and mind. Let’s not allow the ‘Museum of the Future’ to become a reality. Let’s make this campaign the beginning of a better and greener future for all”, said Ambassador Geer.
In order to recognise best local practices in the protection of environment, next year, the EU Delegation will introduce an annual award entitled "Green Municipality".
