EU provides crucial support for North Macedonia in the fight against wildfires

The EU responded fast to the urgent request by the government of North Macedonia for help in its efforts to combat severe wildfires by activating the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.

Through this mechanism, and thanks to the support of participating States, the EU managed rapidly to mobilise one helicopter from Serbia, two helicopters from Slovenia, two aircraft and one helicopter from Türkiye, one aircraft from the rescEU firefighting fleet from Croatia, and one aircraft from Romania. These support units are already engaged in the firefighting.

The EU has always been there for North Macedonia in challenging times. Our rapid and substantial assistance through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism is providing vital support for local efforts in the fight against the devastating wildfires”, stated Ambassador David Geer, Ambassador of the European Union to North Macedonia.

This is not the first time the EU Civil Protection Mechanism has been mobilised to help the country with natural disasters. In August 2021 EU support through the mechanism was critical in overcoming severe wildfires in the areas of Pehchevo and Berovo.  In 2015 and 2016, timely support was provided through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism to cope with severe flooding affecting the country. Support through the mechanism was also provided during the COVID-19 pandemic.
