EU and UNDP to help Moldova monitor and forecast the production of electricity from renewable sources

The central electricity supplier in Moldova, Energocom SA, with the support of the European Union, will develop specialised software that forecasts electricity production from renewable sources.

This will allow the company to reduce the individual imbalance of contracted producers. 

According to the new market rules, which came into play on June 1, 2022, electricity is no longer traded post-facto at real recorded values, but at values declared (forecasted) by producers. Thus, the central electricity supplier is tasked with managing the individual imbalances of contracted producers. Energy purchased for balancing is regulated separately and, as it is priced higher, it affects the final price for consumers.

According to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development, photovoltaic power plants of almost 25 MW, wind power plants of 73.4 MW, biogas power plants of 6.3 MW and hydro power plants of 16.3 MW were installed in June 2022.

 The software will be developed with the support of the ‘Addressing the consequences of the energy crisis in the Republic of Moldova’ programme, financed by the European Union and implemented by UNDP Moldova. It has a budget of €10 million and supports the public authorities of the Republic of Moldova and vulnerable groups, in the context of the increase in natural gas prices.
