Works on railroad from Sukovo to Dimitrovgrad begin – Following reconstruction and modernization, trains to run at 120 kilometers per hour

Within Component 1 of the project of the reconstruction and modernization of the Nis-Dimitrovgrad railroad, following the issuing of the building permit and the registration of the works, the works on the Sukovo-Dimitrovgrad section, 10.2 kilometers long, officially began, announced the Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure.

The projected speed on this section is 120 kilometers per hour, which, as the ministry emphasized, will be a considerable upgrade compared to the current average speed of 30 kilometers per hour.

– That will contribute to the improvement of the quality of the rail infrastructure and a quicker and more efficient rail traffic – the ministry said.

As emphasized, the Nis-Dimitrovgrad railroad is the only part of Corridor X that is not electrified, and it is a unique direct connection between Serbia and Bulgaria, which is used for the transport of large quantities of goods from Turkey and the Middle East.

– This railroad is of key significance as a competitive route toward Corridor IV – the ministry notes.

Let us remind that, as the top state officials said more than a year ago, the reconstruction and modernization of the Nis-Dimitrovgrad railroad and the bypass railroad around Nis will cost EUR 430 million, of which 108 million is an EU grant. In March 2024, it was pointed out that the works should be completed by the end of 2027.
