Commission provides €50 million in financial support to Moldova

Today, the Commission adopted a decision to disburse €50 million (€45 million in loans and €5 million in grants) to Moldova. The disbursement will take place in the coming days. This will be the fifth and final instalment of the ongoing Macro-Financial Assistance (MFA) for Moldova since it was launched, in July 2022. Overall, with this last disbursement, Moldova will have received a total of €295 million under this dedicated MFA operation.

This financial support will help Moldova cover part of its 2024 financing needs and ensure macroeconomic stability, while supporting its reform agenda in conjunction with the ongoing International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme. 

The Commission will release this support after concluding that the country had fulfilled all the policy conditions agreed with the EU. Moldova has, for example, strengthened the rule of law, working on making progress towards finalising the pre-vetting for the self-administration bodies of the judiciary. Progress is also being made in fighting corruption, by defining the competences of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office and the National Anticorruption Centre for the investigation of high-level corruption cases. The country also continues to tackle the informal economy by adopting the 2022-2026 Employment Programme and through targeted actions to combat undeclared work. Moreover, Moldova has bolstered its energy sector by expanding its workforce and enhancing the expertise within the Ministry of Energy and the National Centre for Sustainable Energy. 

The MFA is part of the UE’s wider effort to support Moldova in the wake of the multiple challenges over the last years and to help the country advance on its European path.
