1000 days of the great war. Numbers

A thousand days after the start of a full-scale Russian invasion, Ukraine has shown unprecedented resilience, repelling one of the world's largest armies.
The Great War showed the ability of Ukrainians to defend their territory, carry out counterattacks, regain their territory, quickly adapt to the new reality, live and work under constant missile and drone attacks. Despite heavy losses, both among military personnel and the civilian population, Ukrainian society mobilized into a powerful force supporting the front, funding the army through volunteers and directly.

Ukraine has also managed to get a lot of international support, which provides help in arming the defense forces, rebuilding the energy industry destroyed by Russian shelling and maintaining financial stability.
RFE/RL compiled the key figures in digital terms describing the 1,000 days of Russia's war against Ukraine as of November 19, 2024.
Lost and liberated territories
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine informed Radio Svoboda that by November 15, 2024, since the beginning of the invasion of the Russian Federation (from February 24, 2022), the Russian army had occupied about 66.9 thousand square kilometers of the territory of Ukraine, which is 11 percent of the total the surface of the country within the limits of 1991.
The territories of Ukraine that were liberated during that time make up about 42.5 thousand square kilometers, which is seven percent of the total area of the territory of Ukraine.
The territory of the Kursk Region of the Russian Federation, which is under the control of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, occupies about a thousand square kilometers.
Losses of Russia
Russia gives almost no official data on its losses in the war against Ukraine. Moscow officially stated the number of those killed in September 2022 - at that time there were 5,937 dead. On September 17, 2024, British intelligence reported that Russian losses since the beginning of the invasion were estimated at more than 610,000 killed and wounded. On September 17, 2024, The Wall Street Journal, citing Western intelligence sources, published a figure for the total losses (killed and wounded) of the Russian army at 600,000.

Losses of Ukraine

Officially, Ukraine, like Moscow, does not release information on military casualties, saying that such data will be revealed after the war. On February 25, 2024, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, for the first time since the beginning of the war, stated the number of dead Ukrainian soldiers - 31,000. Ukrainian authorities, commenting on data published by The Wall Street Journal on Ukraine's losses in the war, say that the real figure is "much lower." On February 27, 2024, the then Russian Minister of Defense Sergei Shoigu stated that the losses of the Ukrainian army in terms of dead and wounded amounted to 444,000 people.
Losses among the civilian population of Ukraine
The Office of the Chief Prosecutor of Ukraine told RSE/RL that, in addition to the dead and wounded during the 1,000 days of the great war, investigative bodies also recorded 15,059 cases of kidnapping of Ukrainian citizens and illegal deprivation of liberty by representatives of the Russian occupation authorities.
Given the fact that in the conditions of a full-scale war and the existence of occupied territories, it is difficult or even impossible to carry out investigations by competent authorities and collect information from Ukrainian and international organizations about the number of victims and missing persons, so the final figure can be much higher.
The Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine announced that as a result of the actions of the aggressor country, the most children were injured in Donetsk Oblast - 598, Kharkiv Oblast - 459, Kherson Oblast - 187, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast - 190, Kyiv Oblast - 133, Zaporozhye Oblast - 154 and Mykolaiv Oblast - 117.
Prisoners
According to official information from the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, among the 3,767 released persons, 168 are civilians (125 men and 43 women). The Ukrainian authorities do not give an answer to the question of how many Ukrainian prisoners (military and civilians) may be held in Russia and in territories not controlled by Ukraine.
Refugees and displaced persons
According to Eurostat data, by the end of September 2024, there will be 4.2 million Ukrainian refugees in Europe alone. The International Organization for Migration announced in its October report that 4,294,000 Ukrainians returned from abroad. According to this report, 3.5 million citizens are considered displaced within Ukraine.
According to open source information, the United 24 fund received $747,260,935 between February 2022 and November 12, 2024, the Come Back Alive fund received $378,654,849 between February 2022 and November 12, 2024. Serhi Pritula's fund received $186,974,987 in period from February 2022 to October 24, 2024.
The total amount does not include dozens of smaller funds, as well as fees and donations for individual units of the Defense Forces of Ukraine, which citizens of Ukraine voluntarily spend every day.

The latest study by the consulting and auditing company "Deloitte" states that 92 percent of Ukrainians will donate to help the army or war victims, which is two percentage points more than in 2022.

Western aid to Ukraine
As RFE/RL was told by the Ministry of Finance of Ukraine, since the beginning of the invasion in full scale, the European Union has provided Ukraine with a record amount of direct budget support - about 38 billion euros (40.5 billion US dollars), and the United States of America has provided 28.2 billion US dollars for the budget.
In general, as reported by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, since the beginning of the full-scale war, external budget support has reached more than 100 billion US dollars:
$31.1 billion in 2022;
$42.5 billion in 2023;
$27.2 billion in 2024 (by November 14).
The largest providers of budget assistance in this period are:

EU – 40.5 billion US dollars;
USA – 28.2 billion USD;
IMF – 11.4 billion US dollars;
Japan - 6.3 billion US dollars;
Canada - 5.4 billion US dollars.
The five largest partners in terms of financial support together provided more than 90 percent of all collected funds.
The Ministry of Finance of Ukraine received 33.7 billion US dollars or more than 33 percent of the total volume in the state budget in the form of grants. That is, every third dollar was given by partners on an irrevocable basis. This made it possible to support the liquidity of the budget without increasing the debt burden.
The US is helping the most
Ukraine received the most funds in the form of grants from the USA. The European Union is the second donor in terms of the volume of grant funds - 2.3 billion US dollars. Also, countries like Germany (US$1.4 billion), Japan (US$955 million) and Norway (US$506 million) have provided significant support on an irrevocable basis.
The second part of external financing to Ukraine is provided in the form of loans on preferential terms.

Overall, as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reported in August 2024, since the start of the full-scale war, the EU has provided Ukraine with 108 billion euros in aid.
The largest donor of military aid to Ukraine is the United States of America.
As of February 2022, Congress has appropriated at least $182.99 billion for Russia's deterrence and war response, according to a US government report. Specifically, 131.6 billion for security assistance, including 46.5 billion to increase US military activity in Europe and 45.78 billion to replenish weapons and ammunition provided by the Armed Forces. 43.84 billion was allocated for management and development programs, more than half of these funds went to pay salaries to Ukrainian civil servants. In addition, 40.08 billion dollars were allocated for humanitarian aid.
