Clean Energy for 22 Schools

Investing in energy-efficient solutions in schools means a healthier environment, cleaner air and a better future for children.

Twenty-two primary schools in the Zenica-Doboj Canton (ZDC) are included in a project to replace heating systems powered by fossil fuels with modern, more environmentally friendly pellet-based solutions. The initiative improves the energy efficiency of school facilities, reduces harmful emissions, and enhances air quality in local communities.

Works began at the “Ahmed Muradbegović” Primary School in Stranjani – Vrselje Branch School with the installation of a 44 kW pellet boiler. In parallel, pellet stoves have been installed at the “Omer Mušić” Primary School in Brežani, the Secondary Agricultural School in Dolac (Tešanj), the Vozuća–Ribnica Primary School, and the Slivići Branch School in Zavidovići.

“This represents an important step forward in reducing carbon emissions, increasing energy efficiency, and improving conditions for students and teachers. All schools that still rely on coal or fuel oil for heating will gradually transition to more environmentally friendly energy sources in the coming years,”

The activities are being implemented through a joint project of the Government of the Zenica-Doboj Canton and the United Nations Development Programme, with financial co-funding from the Cantonal Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport. The replacement of heating systems is carried out in phases, in line with construction dynamics and the technical requirements of individual facilities. According to the implementation schedule, works in all 22 schools are expected to be completed by the end of March 2026.

In 2024, the Zenica-Doboj Canton became a partner implementing the UNDP Low-Carbon project, financed by the Green Climate Fund. At this stage, the Canton contributes approximately BAM 460,000, while the remaining funds are provided through UNDP.

The replacement of heating systems in schools across the Zenica-Doboj Canton confirms that investments in clean energy deliver multiple benefits - from healthier air and lower emissions to safer, higher-quality learning environments - demonstrating that the energy transition should begin where future generations are shaped.
