The Republic of Croatia received 53.6 million euros for the purchase of battery trains

On 10 December 2025, the European Commission adopted a Decision on the payment of the Modernisation Fund revenues in accordance with Directive 2003/87/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council - second half-yearly payment cycle 2025.
The Republic of Croatia was paid EUR 53.6 million for investment in battery electric motor (BEMU) trains and the construction of a charging station in northern Croatia. The station will be powered by a photovoltaic power plant equipped with an energy storage system, which represents an important step towards the use of renewable energy sources in railway transport.
The beneficiary of the support is the Croatian Railways - Passenger Transport (HŽPP), which will, thanks to the approved funds, acquire six new battery electric motor (BEMU) trains that will operate in northern Croatia. This investment represents a significant contribution to the modernisation and decarbonisation of the Croatian railway system in line with national and European sustainable development goals.
