CIVIL SOCIETY LEADS PUBLIC AWARENESS EFFORTS ON THE LEGALIZATION OF UNPERMITTED CONSTRUCTIONS
The legalization of unpermitted construction is crucial for Kosovans to enjoy their property rights, improve access to finance and fuel economic growth. Gruaja Hyjnore, a local non-governmental organization based in Gjilan, was among 17 groups that voluntarily joined USAID efforts to motivate and assist citizens throughout Kosovo to apply for legalization of their property.
Applying the training and using the promotional materials provided by the USAID Economic Governance Activity, Gruaja Hyjnore staff made door-to-door visits, hosted public discussions, and campaigned on social media to reach hundreds of citizens in Gjilan/Gnjilane municipality, informing them about the legalization program, procedures, and benefits, and encouraging them to apply. Furthermore, they actively advocated with the municipality of Gjilan for improved process efficiency and reduced administrative fees for vulnerable groups.
“Informing citizens on the program and encouraging them to apply was quite a satisfying experience for me,” says Arijeta Maka from Gruaja Hyjnore who participated in these activities from April to August 2022. “This program is very important since it helps clarify property rights. Property rights are particularly important for empowering vulnerable groups, and this has been our focus," she concluded.
Local leadership and ownership are essential for fostering sustainable results in the program for the legalization of unpermitted constructions and improving the well-being of the citizens of Kosovo through secure property rights, improved access to finance and economic opportunities.
