BioSense Institute Develops Robot Called Gari to Increase Blueberry Yields

The BioSense Institute, with the support of science funds of the European Union, is working on developing a system for the digital management of the production of blueberries, which also includes a robot named “Gari”, which will contribute to an increase in blueberry yields.

– We are now about halfway to the realization of the project, the robot has been tested and it is operational in the field. With the help of an algorithm, it can navigate through blueberry lanes and it is equipped with the latest technology for the sampling of the soil, the spraying of the plants and the elimination of the weeds. That way, blueberries get everything they need for a successful development – Oskar Marko, the deputy director for innovations and cooperation with the economy at the BioSense Institute, said in a press release.

He added that agriculturists would have an opportunity to realize greater earnings, in which they would be helped by digital technologies.

The project “FlexiGroBots” is realized in cooperation with 14 partners from Europe and the company “Zeleni hit”, with the aim of having the process of plant production in Europe be automatized.

The platform is currently tested in three fields of great economic significance: grape (in Spain), rapeseed (in Finland) and blueberry (in Serbia and Lithuania).

As explained in the press release, the multirobot platform, in addition to various robots on the ground, also entails unmanned aircraft.

“Gari” is Novi Sad slang for “buddy”.
