Varaždin Hospital Gets Most Modern Operating Block in Croatia
General Hospital Varaždin has opened a new central operating block, described as one of the most advanced medical facilities of its kind in Croatia. Index reports that this brand new complex represents a major modernisation of the hospital system, bringing operating rooms, intensive care, diagnostics, and other medical services into a more connected and technologically advanced environment.
The newly opened facility covers around 12,000 square metres and is considered one of the largest healthcare investments in Croatia in recent years. The project was worth more than 45 million euros, with significant funding coming through European Union recovery funds and support from national and regional authorities.
The new central operating block includes eight ultra-modern operating theatres, a new intensive care unit, advanced diagnostic areas, sterilisation facilities, laboratories, and other supporting medical departments. By bringing these services together in one building, the hospital aims to improve efficiency, reduce patient transfers between departments, and increase the overall safety and quality of care.
One of the most important features of the project is that the new building connects several previously separate hospital units. The facility is linked with surrounding departments through enclosed corridors, creating a more integrated hospital system instead of the older pavilion-style layout. This is expected to make patient movement faster and easier, especially in urgent medical situations.
The complex also includes a helipad on the roof of the building, allowing emergency patients to be transported directly to the medical facilities below. This feature is intended to improve response times for the most serious cases and strengthen emergency healthcare capacity in northern Croatia.
Hospital officials said the value of the investment is not only in the new technology and infrastructure, but also in creating better working conditions for medical staff and better treatment conditions for patients. The new environment is designed to support modern medical procedures and provide healthcare workers with equipment and spaces that match contemporary standards.
The opening of the new operating block is seen as an important step for healthcare development in the region. Varaždin Hospital serves not only the city itself but also a wider area of northern Croatia, meaning the investment could benefit a large number of patients who require specialised treatment and surgery.
Overall, the project represents a major upgrade of Croatia’s medical infrastructure. By combining advanced technology, improved organisation, and modern facilities, the new operating block is expected to strengthen the country’s healthcare system and bring hospital care closer to European standards.
