Protecting communities from natural and man-made civil emergencies

In Albania, natural and man-made disasters such as floods, fires, earthquakes, and industrial accidents are a constant threat to the safety and well-being of its citizens. Recognizing the need to strengthen the country's emergency response capabilities, the Government of Poland has partnered with UNDP to modernize and enhance the standards and operational capacities of the Albanian Fire Protection and Rescue Services through a project: Strengthen Capacities of Albanian Fire Protection and Rescue Service

The project, which is being implemented in municipalities of Lezha, Kurbin, Kruja, Kamëz, Shijak, Tirana, Kavajë, Durrës, Fier and Pogradec, is focusing on building three fire stations in the municipalities of Fier, Lezha, and Pogradec. These stations will be constructed using a "build back better" approach, which ensures that they are able to withstand future disasters and continue to function effectively.

In addition to building new fire stations, the project is also providing firefighting, search, and rescue equipment to municipalities of Lezha, Durrës and Fieri, as well as purchasing fire trucks to municipalities of Lezha, Fieri and Pogradec and 169 professional personal protective equipment for the firefighters. These resources will help to ensure that the fire protection and rescue services are able to respond quickly and effectively to emergencies.

This project is a clear demonstration of UNDP's commitment to supporting countries in building resilience against natural and man-made disasters. The organization's extensive experience and expertise in emergency response, in conjunction with funding and support from the Government of Poland, is helping to ensure that the fire protection and rescue services in Albania are equipped to handle any situation that may arise and protect the lives and properties of citizens.

This  project is a valuable investment in the future of the country, helping to make the municipalities more resilient to disasters and emergencies, this is a significant step towards ensuring the safety of the citizens and protecting the communities from potential hazards.
