Germany and the EU support Green Transport in Tirana with 81.2 million euros

The Minister of Finance and Economy, Ervin Mete, the Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj and the Director of KfW in Albania, Brit Horschke signed the Financing Agreements for the Green Transport Project in Tirana in the amount of 50 million euros loan, granted by the German Government through KfW Development Bank, as well as a grant of 31.2 million euros, granted by the Western Balkans Investment Fund (WBIF).

The total estimated cost of the project is 110.37 million euros. The rest of the financing will be covered by the Municipality of Tirana, in the amount of 29.17 million euros.

The project includes the implementation of a bus rapid transit system (Bus-Rapid Transit-BRT), using battery-electric buses on three transport lines in Tirana (Unaza, Tirana e Re, Kombinat-Kinostudio). The aim of the project is to improve the provision of services in public transport as well as to reduce CO2 emissions. This is to contribute to climate and environment protection, as well as improving energy efficiency.

Through this project, the aim is to guarantee a long-term and sustainable solution, friendly to the environment, as well as with acceptable costs in relation to other systems with high transport capacity; to expand and extend the public transport network, increase its usability, as well as increase the effectiveness of the transport service; to reduce environmental pollution; 20% reduction in travel time; to increase the speed of movement on the new transport lines, thanks to the system of dedicated lanes and the way of management.

The project is part of the measures taken by the Government to achieve the objectives for sustainable development and climate protection and is expected to complete the implementation at the end of 2029.
