An absolute record. More than 10,000 international sanctions have already been imposed on Russia

In the two months since the recognition of the independence of the so-called "People's Republic of Dnieper" and "People's Republic of Lugansk" and the beginning of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, more than 10,000 sanctions have been imposed against Russia. The United Kingdom has imposed the largest number of restrictions against Russia.

As of April 29, the total number of anti-Russian sanctions is 10,128, according to data from the global database for monitoring sanctions restrictions Castellum.ai. Dozens of countries applied 7,374 restrictive measures against the aggressor country during the invasion of Ukraine.

Russia also had 2,754 sanctions until February 22, at a time when Iran was still ahead of it in the number of sanctions.

On February 21, the President of Russia declared the recognition of the sovereignty of "DNR" and "LNR", and on February 24, he announced a special military operation in Donbas. These events became the trigger for the imposition of harsh sanctions on Moscow by the Western world. The restrictions intensified even after the crimes of the Russian army in the temporarily occupied territories were made public.

Which countries have imposed the most restrictions on Russia

The biggest surprise regarding the sanctions was caused by European countries, historically cautious in their relations with Russia - they even surpassed American restrictions. An example of this is the decision to expel some Russian banks from the SWIFT financial messaging system. In addition to Western countries, Japan and Australia are very active.

The first five countries that imposed the most sanctions on Russia in this period are Great Britain (1,124 sanctions after February 22), Switzerland 1,103, the EU (942), France (931) and the United States (907).

The total number of sanctions is dominated by personal restrictions - 6,379, then restrictions on companies and legal entities 974, on ships - 13 and airplanes - three.

"World Hooligans." When did Russia overtake according to the number of sanctions

According to the number of sanctions, Russia has already overtaken Iran, which has led the way, 2.6 times, and Cuba 50 times.

The world's biggest "hooligans" along with Russia are:

• Iran - 3,616 sanctions,

• Syria - 2,608

• North Korea - 2,077

• Venezuela - 651,

• Myanmar - 510,

• Cuba - 208.

The total number of sanctions imposed on these countries - 9,670, will also be lower than the Russian record at the end of April 2022.

Interestingly, restrictions on Iran, for example, have been imposed for decades, largely because of the nuclear program and support for terrorism. At the same time, Russia managed to reach more than 10,000 sanctions in just two months of war, bombing Ukrainian cities non-stop.

What sanctions have been imposed on Russia

Until February 2022, many US sanctions against Russia before the war in Ukraine concerned interference in the 2016 elections and attacks on political dissidents in Russia and abroad, as well as the annexation of Crimea in 2014.

Sanctions imposed on February 22 mostly apply to natural persons - 6,171, compared to 974 imposed on legal entities, and these are most often companies or state bodies.

Among the legal entities under sanctions, especially Russian banks (Sberbank, VTB, Novikombank) and a number of state-owned companies, which made it difficult to attract foreign capital.

Key projects and segments of the economy affected by sanctions:

• Sanctions destroyed the $ 11 billion Nord Stream 2 project;

• Closed skies over European countries, which practically destroys air traffic in Russia;

• A wave of restrictions on the import of Russian oil, gas and coal has begun;

• Strict public debt limits;

• Imports of Russian metals are limited;

• Limited to imports of luxury goods and certain food products from Russia;

• Restrictions on technology exports to Russia;

• Russia's access to IMF and World Bank funds is limited;

• Most-favored-nation status abolished;

• Restrictions have been introduced on correspondent accounts of Russian banks;

• Russian banks have limited access to SWIFT.

According to the Russian statistical service X-Compliance, the number of sanctioned Russians has doubled since the start of the war. According to the service, from February 22 to April 22, Western countries updated the lists of sanctions against Russian participants 247 times.

The first on the list of "punished" were representatives of the government, the State Duma, the General Staff, oligarchs close to the Russian president, his relatives, as well as Putin himself.

As a result of the strict policy of sanctions, 2,432 natural and legal persons, ships and planes from Russia are now included in the lists of various countries. Including the number of Russian individuals / facilities under the strictest, so-called "blocking sanctions" by April 22 was about 2,000.

The most frequent on the lists of sanctions were industrial, scientific, financial and transport organizations. Among the 357 operating Russian banks that are directly on the sanctions list, 33 are at risk of sanctions as a rule 50 percent - another nine related to individuals and legal entities (managers, co-owners) - direct participants in the sanctions list - 50.

According to the 50 percent rule, which applies to the sanctions lists of OFAC (USA), EU and UK, sanctions also apply to companies that are not directly listed on

the sanctions list, but in which the sanctioned individual owns 50 percent or more.

As of February 21, 2,347 Russian companies were in danger of spreading the rule, while two months later, on April 22, 3,499 companies were in danger.

Will sanctions stop the Kremlin?

The pressure on Russia is growing every day. The official Kremlin has already compared the barrage of restrictive measures to "looting by enemy countries", but talking about the impact of sanctions in Russia is prohibited by law.

Hundreds of international companies are leaving the country. Some of them leave Russia because of their commitment to sanctions, others "self-sanction" - that is, they decide to leave, even if they are not obliged to do so by law.

According to Finance Ministry official in the Obama and Trump administrations, co-founder of Castellum.AI Peter Pyatetsky, the size of the sanctions can be compared to a financial nuclear strike.

"This is the biggest sanction event in history. "In less than two weeks, Russia has become the biggest target of global sanctions and financial outcasts since part of the global economy," he said.

According to him, the sanctions against Russia show the exceptional unity of the United States and its allies before Putin, their determination to use their economic power to prevent him from an unjustified war. However, there are many deterrents to Ukraine's non-NATO membership.

According to the expert, sanctions against Russia will continue to grow, because Putin still does not stop hostilities.

Back in March, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced that the United States and its partners "are coordinating the possibility of banning Russian oil imports, ensuring that relevant oil supplies are available on world markets." This process has already begun, and it is predicted that it will be one of the most painful packages of sanctions against Russia.
